My favorite Valentine’s Day gift is always from my Mom. My first year away from home (freshman in college), my mom sent me a pair of socks as a Valentine’s gift. She continued to do this every year for years. Some years she would send chocolate candy. One year, she sent my children socks and me a starbucks giftcard. To me, these gifts represent the great love of all – unconditional love.
Valentine’s Day is about celebrating unconditional love. Webster’s Dictionary defines unconditional as “not conditional or limited, absolute, unqualified.” One of the definitions of love is “a strong affection for another rising out of kinship or personal ties.”
To me, unconditional love is:
- Loving without set conditions
- Knowing the real someone, and loving them anyways
- loving without expecting anything in return
- more of a behavior than a feeling
- from the true self
- the greatest gift you can give anyone
I hope this is a wonderful reminder for all of us moms this Valentine’s Day to practice unconditional love. I can’t wait to see what my Mom sends me this year which makes me feel loved!
Here are a few gift ideas for your children if you are inspired by my own mother! (all on Amazon Prime to get here by Valentine’s Day).
- Candy socks (that will make the dentist happy)
- Valentine’s Day books!
- Socks for little boys
- Doodle socks craft for older kids
- Gratitude Journal for kids

Other (free) ways to show unconditional love:
- Take your child on a date (including getting dressed up and making it special)
- Share with your child(ten) the things you love about them
- Write them a heartfelt, encouraging card for them
- Bake them a special treat for Valentine’s Day
- Have a snack prepared for them in the shape of a heart
- Do a special Valentine’s Day craft with them (like this or this!)
- Go on a walk and look for heart-shaped items in nature or make your own with sticks and rocks
- Bake items and bring them to your local Firestation or Nursing home
- Give your child some pretty flowers or a plant
We’d love to hear other ways you celebrate Valentine’s Day with your kids with gifts or traditions.
Also, several local bookstores also have Valentine’s Day displays in their children’s section!
