Father’s Day is right around the corner! And for many of us (myself included), the pressures and stresses of the past few months – the pandemic and social justice issues to name two – have pushed it to the back burner.
Luckily, there’s still plenty of time to find something special while supporting important causes. Here are our favorite Father’s Day gifts for dads from local, black-owned businesses.
ALL VERY GOODS: FACE MASKS
Whether dad already has an amazing collection of masks or has been hesitant to wear one regularly, a face mask from All Very Goods should get him excited about pandemic-friendly accessories. The masks are 100% cotton and do more than keep dad and his community safe. For every mask sold, one is donated to local organizations supporting essential workers. Plus, 100% of the profits from face masks sold in June will go to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the National Bail Fund Network.
CALABASH TEA & TONIC: SPICE BLEND
Does dad love to cook? Then a spice blend from Calabash Tea & Tonic is the perfect Father’s Day gift! Each has been carefully designed or curated by Sunyatta Amen, inspired by her Syrian-Jamaican/Cuban family’s spice buying adventures. They all look delicious, but I think my husband would love the Voodoo Child Creole and Jamaican Jerk Seasonings best.
DISTRICT OF CLOTHING: DAD HAT
I love District of Clothing‘s DC-centric and social justice-oriented messages, emblazoned across t-shirts and hats. My Father’s Day favorite is the Common Purpose “dad hat,” which was designed to celebrate the unity of intention and harmony since we need it now more than ever. Even better? Each purchase supports COVID-19 relief through the World Central Kitchen.
JANELLE WILLIAMS CONSULTING: PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION
One thing the last few months have taught me is that I would really benefit from being better organized. I can’t believe how much clutter accumulates throughout the day with all of us at home! My husband is a neat freak and it’s driving him crazy. So, professional home organization by a professional like Janelle Williams would probably be his dream gift. She does office organization, too, so keep her in mind for whenever you’re able to go back into work!
KHERPA'S RAW FOOD JUICE BAR: FRESH JUICES
Is dad on a health kick? Shouldn’t we all be after almost three months at home?! Kherpa’s Raw Food Juice Bar is here for us. From refreshing and light green juices to more filling (but still raw) dishes like curry cauliflower and creamy collards, this is a takeout option that will leave everyone feeling healthy and refreshed, ready to do whatever activities dad has in store for the day.
MAHOGANY BOOKS: CHILDREN'S BOOKS
We all know that reading to our children, especially the youngest ones, is one of the best things we can do to help them learn and grow. Today, many of us are searching for books that showcase diversity and anti-racism. Mahogany Books has an amazing selection and is the first place you should look for a special book for dad to read to the kids.
NICOLE CROWDER: MEDITATION PILLOW
Maybe you’re lucky and the dad in your life is very zen. Maybe you’re like me and you wish he was. Either way, one of Nicole Crowder Upholstery’s beautiful meditation pillows would be a thoughtful gift for dad. You can select from her list of fabrics or, if you’re feeling brave, go for the “Designer’s Choice” so the gift is a surprise for you, too.
NUBIAN HUEMAN: GROOMING PRODUCTS
Does dad have a beard? Up his grooming game with these products from Nubian Hueman. They’ve got everything dad could want, from beard wash to beard balm, plus other men’s products like masculine shampoos and soaps. Easily build a gift by clicking on an item and scrolling down to the bottom of their page to see a list of complementary products.
ROAMING ROOSTER: CHICKEN DINNER
I love to cook, and takeout is a pretty rare treat for my family. When we do order, my husband’s one requirement is that we’re ordering something we can’t cook at home. Fried chicken fits the bill! Roaming Rooster is offering its famous fried chicken for pickup and delivery, and it would definitely be a hit meal on Father’s Day (or any other day)!
SIYO BOUTIQUE: FATHER'S DAY CARD
One of my favorite things about Mother’s Day is the card my children give me, so I always look for a good one for my husband when Father’s Day comes around. Siyo Boutique has a great selection of cards for dads that are perfect for the holiday. I love her hand lettering and sense of humor, and I know any of these would bring a smile to any dad’s face.
SUPERMOM CULTURE: T-SHIRT
Supermom Culture is a local business that is committed to creating place where mothers can feel seen and understood. But, dads need love, too! They created this dad version of their popular Supermom shirt, just in time for Father’s Day. It’s 100% cotton and perfect for the super dad in your life.
THREADLEAF: RAILROAD TOTE
I’ve always been a fan of tote bags – they’re sturdy, they fit everything, and they’re always in style. This railroad tote from Threadleaf is perfect for dads and will fit his work from home supplies, along with diapers, snacks, and whatever else he may need when heading out with the kids.
