We All Need Friends in Our Lives: The Value of Mom Friends

1

Have you ever heard someone say that boys come and go, but friends will last forever? Since having kids, I think the new saying is more like friends come and go but kids last forever! Things change once we have kids, but it should not be like that. I still think having good friends is so important. As mothers, we all need friends (both mom friends and non-mom friends) to talk to, vent to, and just listen to.

The Secret to Friendship as a Mother? Prioritizing.

Mom Friends 1Keeping friends can be hard to do once you have a family, and it’s sometimes hard to tell whether all of your friends totally understand if you drop off the face of the earth. Luckily, your true friends will pick up right where you last left off.

If you miss your friends or need more friends in your life, you have to make it a priority. Yes, it’s fun to go out with your friends without the kids, but it can be hard to find the time or coordinate a sitter for a girls night out.

Luckily, it’s equally fun to meet up with your friends with the kids. You can plan dinner playdates, park playdates, or just go out for a walk.

If you’re feeling lonely or isolated, get out there and set up some time to meet your friends for a drink, coffee or just a walk. You will be so happy you did!

Resources for Making Mom Friends

Many women find themselves searching for “mom friends” after they have children. If you fall into this group, there are so many mom groups out there these days where you can meet new moms.

After I become a mom, I signed up for a new moms group called P.A.C.E., a group “led by professional mental health educators trained in the fields of infant development, parenting skills, family relationships and group dynamics.”

It was a wonderful place to meet other moms who were in the same position I was in. They were just as tired and were feeling the same complex emotions we all feel as new mothers.

You can also meet mom friends through your non-mom friends. Shortly after I had my first child, I was set up on a blind date with a mom, and after only five minutes we knew we would be friends forever.

We bonded over our same jewelry and the fact that we do NOT like Chardonnay. It was a match made in heaven! It wasn’t a forced relationship and felt so easy – the best kind of friendship.

One way to make some buddies is by coming to the DC Area Moms Blog first event for Moms! Moms Mingle + Munch is meant to help welcome moms new to DC and hang out with moms who have called DC home for a while. Come and invite your friends, get some swag and complimentary pizza, and a chance to win some cool giveaways. Tickets are only $5.

Later in August, there’s a mom speed dating event right here in DC, organized by Petite DC.
