The American Pops Orchestra’s Pied Piper

The American Pops Orchestra’s “Pied Piper” will provide live music to this classic story. As the story goes, the Piper is in a town where music and dancing isn’t allowed. The Piper, reimagined as a woman in this production, will have a tricky time convincing the townspeople that music can solve their rat infestation. As long as the locals provide the hefty award for solving the rodent problem, things just might work out! Come to the production to see how the story unfolds. And get ready to sing along with the songs listed below. We plan to listen to these songs ahead of time to prepare our kids to be even more involved and having fun with the “Pied Piper” performance.

  • 9 to 5
  • Think
  • You Turn Me Right Round
  • Mambo Italiano
  • Shall We Dance
  • I Put A Spell On You
  • With One Look
  • I Wanna Dance With Somebody
  • I Say A Little Prayer
  • I Will Always Love You

The “Pied Piper” by The American Pops Orchestra involves the audience in a playful way at a professional production. Get ready for fun, laughter, and memories made with kids. Arena Stage is an excellent setting for children to see real actors and musicians in their element. We live in an amazing city that provides space for us to take our families to see productions created and written by professionals who are passionate about their art. There are two show times to the “Pied Piper” which last roughly an hour. Tickets are $32 for adults and $17 for kids. Be sure to use coupon code DCMOMS for 10% off!

Q&A with the Founder, Luke Frazier

How do you pick the pop songs used in the show?
I select all of the music from main stage performances in consultation with the writer, Clay. I want the kids to experience music that their parents or grandparents may have heard while they were growing up. I don’t believe that kids only want to listen to kids music. We find that kids love anything that sounds fun and is sung really well.

How will they be incorporated into the performance (is the full song performed or a snippet)?
Each song is just an excerpt from the full song, we want to make sure we keep the show flowing and give kids just enough to pique their interest.

Why is it important for children to experience live musical performances at an early age?
Live performance is all about imagination, we want to foster the sense of creativity and imagination from a very early age.

What makes The Pied Piper” a show for the entire family?
Clay is a genius at making every children’s show funny for the whole family, there are many levels of comedy for everyone to enjoy. In addition to the laughs the music is top notch and our singers are out of this world!

Tell is about the thought behind choosing “The Pied Piper” as an original APO production.
Each year I try to think about a very common story that I’ve known since childhood that might resonate with our modern model. The Pied Piper is such a great tale for kids, it teaches the value of thinking for yourself and trying to make a difference in the world through speaking your mind and not always just following along.

What is the importance in producing home grown family entertainment in the DC area?
DC is a treasure trove of artistic talent and we always seek to foster the best in our region and beyond.

Why do you recommend families to see this show?
Every APO show is a world premiere and you won’t be able to see this anywhere else. We make sure every moment is unique to our audience and we want everyone to be a part of that magic.

What is something unique that the audience can look forward to with this show? (Examples could be about Costumes, actors, set, live music).
This show is unique in that is a world premiere, just like every APO show. We’re going to have zany costumes and props, I like to keep everyone guessing as to what someone is going to be wearing or walk out with next. I like to laugh just as hard as the kids.

Courtney Whittington
Courtney was born and raised in Louisiana where she met her husband (married in 2005). They have moved several times, but finally feel very settled in NW DC after moving back in 2016. She has four energetic kids: Cormac (2010), Evangeline (2013), Solomon (2016), and Antoinette (2019). She thinks motherhood is absolutely wonderful, but is constantly trying to figure out how to manage it all. She spends her days talking Star Wars, playing with legos, doing crafts, having tea parties, and chasing her toddler. Motherhood is wonderful and wild and in 2017 she banded together with other mothers to start DC Area Moms to inspire, learn, and grow together. She loves morning coffee, chocolate, chatting with people since she's an extrovert, a clean house (which is rare these days). She dislikes when her kids don't listen the first time, she abhors littering, and doesn't enjoy shopping.
