We have created a user friendly online process for grandparents and parents to write about their lives. The content is then published in a book dedicated to their children or grandchildren. It is so meaningful for kids to know about their families. I also know it gives the “author” pleasure (and let’s face it – something to do right now at home!) to write their memories.
babycito is a free, inclusive online community designed to connect parents and caregivers with family support service providers in Northern Virginia (and surrounding areas soon!). We educate parents about essential family support services and provide them with referrals to trusted, local providers. We believe that all constellations of families should be empowered with knowledge and resources to access the services they need. Our core values are:
- Inclusion: We serve all constellations of families and include a variety of providers to meet each family’s unique needs.
- Education: We provide a service guide as well as service planning consultations so families are aware of what’s available and are prepared when they need support.

It’s common for family members to have questions about whether their child’s behavior and reactions following a traumatic experience are “typical.” TRUE Center, a new non-profit focused on increasing access to trauma-focused, evidence-based care for children and families, wants to help answer those questions.
TRUE Center, based in Washington D.C., offers intervention and prevention services to children and families who have experienced trauma, regardless of their ability to pay. These services include consultations to answer caregivers’ questions about their child’s reactions to trauma, treatment for children and families who have experienced trauma, and free education and training to parents and communities. TRUE’s clinicians are experts in time-limited treatments that are evidence based, meaning they have been shown to work. TRUE Center will begin clinical services in Fall 2022.

The U.S. Chess Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of teaching students, especially at-risk youth, to play chess in order to improve their academic and social skills.
The U.S. Chess Center’s teaching methods are fun and effective. Our nationally certified chess teachers help students become creative, enjoy learning, and pursue their passions. We emphasize problem-solving over memorization; as our students learn to think independently, they achieve success and develop well-earned senses of accomplishment. We provide students from throughout the Washington metropolitan area opportunities to meet as friends and equals over the chessboard at our classes, tournaments, and special events.
Not only have our students become champions in chess (winning more than 50 state and national championship titles), they also have used chess to accomplish their academic and life goals. Hello DC Area Moms! My name is Claudia Smistek and I am a research assistant at BL2. We are doing a research project on how children learn over time. Here is more information listed below if you are interested:
Are you interested in how children learn? We at the Brain and Language Center for Neuroimaging (BL2) are too! We are part of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). In our BL2 Center, we are conducting a study on how [deaf and hearing children] learn, particularly in the areas of language, reading, and other higher cognitive functions (attention and emotion).
We are recruiting children [that have no hearing loss, use hearing aids, or use cochlear implants]. [Both monolingual (English) or bilingual (English/ASL) who will soon enter the 1st grade are invited to participate]. We will test them before and after their first year of primary schooling. Our studies are designed to be a fun opportunity for both parents and children.
Children will play science games while we measure their brain activity using harmless light (safe with hearing aids and cochlear implants) and their temperature using a thermal camera (touchless). This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at Gallaudet University. Participation is entirely voluntary.
We will pay $20 per hour for your participation and travel to/from our BL2 Center. Children will also receive a small toy!
