Hello DC Area Moms! My name is Claudia Smistek and I am a research assistant at BL2. We are doing a research project on how children learn over time. Here is more information listed below if you are interested:
Are you interested in how children learn? We at the Brain and Language Center for Neuroimaging (BL2) are too! We are part of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). In our BL2 Center, we are conducting a study on how [deaf and hearing children] learn, particularly in the areas of language, reading, and other higher cognitive functions (attention and emotion).
We are recruiting children [that have no hearing loss, use hearing aids, or use cochlear implants]. [Both monolingual (English) or bilingual (English/ASL) who will soon enter the 1st grade are invited to participate]. We will test them before and after their first year of primary schooling. Our studies are designed to be a fun opportunity for both parents and children.
Children will play science games while we measure their brain activity using harmless light (safe with hearing aids and cochlear implants) and their temperature using a thermal camera (touchless). This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at Gallaudet University. Participation is entirely voluntary.
We will pay $20 per hour for your participation and travel to/from our BL2 Center. Children will also receive a small toy!
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to call our lab at (202) 618-6808 or email us at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment.

The StudyPro is an executive function and study skills center. It was created to fill a gap in the world of student learning. Seeing that many students were smart but struggling to manage the “process” of school, they wanted to build a place where students gained mastery of the skills that were expected, but not fully taught in school. While tutoring support was readily available for kids who struggled with “content”, nowhere existed that focused exclusively on building competency in “Executive Function” skills such as time management, planning, and organization.
The StudyPro offers study skills courses, 1:1 coaching, and a “coached” homework center to practice using study skills on “real work”. We know that no single approach is right for every individual, so we start by meeting the student where they are and focus on fostering their strengths, vs. just remediating differences.
Seeking Child Participants for Studies at Georgetown University!
Dear DC Area Moms,
We are the Learning and Development Lab at Georgetown University: a group of researchers studying language learning and child development. We need your help to understand how children learn!
At our lab, we use simple games and activities to understand how children learn languages and other patterns. Our research is made possible through the support of families like yours. We are looking for children between the ages of 4 and 9 to participate in our research studies.
Participating is easy! Right now, all of our studies are conducted online. In the study that we are running right now, your child will learn a made-up language (we call it Silly Speak) by playing a computer game online (with our help). The study consists of two parts, each 20-30 minutes long, which take place on different days. We offer $20 compensation per child.
If you’d like your child to participate in our studies, or if you’d like us to contact you about future opportunities to participate, please sign up at this link: https://bit.ly/3wZORTl
If you could please share this message with parents in your group, we would really appreciate it. We look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
The Research Team at the Learning and Development Lab, Georgetown University
My name is nancy singh and I am an Infant, toddler, and school age sleep consultant with WeeSleep. I am researching companies and platforms who I can partner with to bring more awareness to both of our businesses. Please check out our website http://www.wee-sleep.com. I would love to have my business registered on your directory so I can help tired families get the rest they deserve. In return, I would be available to send you blog posts, advertise your page on my accounts, and even run LIVES for your following, in the future.
I am a first time mom to baby Camden and a certified baby and toddler sleep coach working with children ages 4 months-4 years old. When I had my son I realized how many sleep myths we believe, including the biggest one: you will never sleep again. That is FALSE! Ask me how to get more sleep for your little ones and yourself!
We recognize the fact that children often lose many of the skills that they have gained during the school year. To help prevent this “summer slide,” two veteran pre-school teachers, Monica Brewer and Valerie Valentine have teamed up to provide supplemental online instruction for 3-5 year olds beginning this July. We team up with your child to supplement reading and math skills in one of two formats:
· 30-minute individual sessions
· 45-minute group sessions (no more than 4 children per group).
Sessions are run online between 9am – 1pm Monday to Thursday on a secure Zoom channel. (For parents of children scheduled to attend Camp Berry, arrangements have been made to accommodate these sessions during camp.)
Cost:
· Individual Sessions: $35 per session.
· Group Sessions: $25 per child per session.
While parents are free to choose the number of sessions that they would like to use, we recommend two sessions per week.
If you’re interested you can contact us via email at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Valerie and Monica (Team Strides!)
