The U.S. Chess Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of teaching students, especially at-risk youth, to play chess in order to improve their academic and social skills.
The U.S. Chess Center’s teaching methods are fun and effective. Our nationally certified chess teachers help students become creative, enjoy learning, and pursue their passions. We emphasize problem-solving over memorization; as our students learn to think independently, they achieve success and develop well-earned senses of accomplishment. We provide students from throughout the Washington metropolitan area opportunities to meet as friends and equals over the chessboard at our classes, tournaments, and special events.
Not only have our students become champions in chess (winning more than 50 state and national championship titles), they also have used chess to accomplish their academic and life goals. Two of our students earned Rhodes Scholarships and hundreds earned academic scholarships. See where our students have gone to college.
Since 1992, we have taught chess to nearly 40,000 students and at over 150 schools across the National Capital Region. View a map of the schools and places where we have taught chess or held events over the past 30 years.
Our goals include:
- Improving academic skills.
- Increasing children’s attention spans.
- Teaching young people that they have control over much of their environment, so that the decisions that they make will have consequences in the future, even if not all of those consequences are immediately apparent.
- Bringing together students from a wide range of backgrounds in a safe, fun setting.
- Increasing students’ self-confidence.
- Awakening an interest in learning and achievement in students of all ages.
- Improving the resiliency of youths so that they avoid negative temptations.

Hello DC Area Moms! My name is Claudia Smistek and I am a research assistant at BL2. We are doing a research project on how children learn over time. Here is more information listed below if you are interested:
Are you interested in how children learn? We at the Brain and Language Center for Neuroimaging (BL2) are too! We are part of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). In our BL2 Center, we are conducting a study on how [deaf and hearing children] learn, particularly in the areas of language, reading, and other higher cognitive functions (attention and emotion).
We are recruiting children [that have no hearing loss, use hearing aids, or use cochlear implants]. [Both monolingual (English) or bilingual (English/ASL) who will soon enter the 1st grade are invited to participate]. We will test them before and after their first year of primary schooling. Our studies are designed to be a fun opportunity for both parents and children.
Children will play science games while we measure their brain activity using harmless light (safe with hearing aids and cochlear implants) and their temperature using a thermal camera (touchless). This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at Gallaudet University. Participation is entirely voluntary.
We will pay $20 per hour for your participation and travel to/from our BL2 Center. Children will also receive a small toy!
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to call our lab at (202) 618-6808 or email us at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment.
For Love of Children (FLOC) mission is to provide educational support and services beyond the classroom to help students succeed from second grade through college and career. We offer intervention tutoring programs meant for students who are behind in reading and/or math. Our tutors start where the students are to help build their foundational skills in these subjects. After 28 hours, students can regain at least 1 year of grade level proficiency. We work exclusively with the DC population by teaching, empowering and transforming students’ lives through our Neighborhood Tutoring Program. Along with coaching through college and career readiness in our City Leaders program.
Let’s get together online and welcome GroovaRoo Nova Prenatal and Baby Wearing Dance to the N. Virginia/MD/DC area! GroovaRoo Nova is putting GroovaRoo Dance on the map in yet another state—just a few on the east coast so far and we’re growing!
Throw your stress somewhere way out of reach and strap in your cute little dance partner (your baby will dance heart to heart with you in his/her stretchy wrap or soft structure carrier). We’ll warm-up/cool down and learn 2 short dances (think line dance at a wedding) each week to move you and your baby to a “happy” place! Don’t be surprised if the babies get so relaxed they fall asleep as they take their peaceful cue from our hip rolls and soulful moves. So much more fun than driving around the block or bouncing your baby until they reach a calmer state.
We also offer prenatal instruction during our classes; we practice movements that will help strengthen your core and open up the pelvic girdle, giving you a powerful, natural coping technique to use during labor. Plus you’ll be familiar with the dances for when your baby arrives!
Give your child space to create, find purpose, and learn new skills with our high quality, online programs.

Power Tots leads fun, safe, and empowering movement classes at your child’s school, childcare center, or after-school program. Now offering classes in-person in local parks around the DMV and NYC area as well as live virtual classes anytime over Google Meet. For over 30 years, our proven curriculum has helped children ages 12 months to 12 years grow physically, mentally, and emotionally— setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy habits.
We believe in the power of play to help children learn about themselves and their world. Through adventure and fun, we encourage kids to take risks, build resilience, and celebrate their achievements all in a supportive and non-competitive environment.
Our programs tap into a critical time in children’s lives when their brains are rapidly developing. New movements, such as walking across a balance beam or rolling like a ball, nourish the brain’s learning center and teach kids how to listen, focus, and follow directions.
The Lane is a family social club in Ivy City in Washington, DC. Our mission is to be a positive gathering space to create community and fun for families in the DC area. We offer an indoor/outdoor play space where children 6 and under can play safely while parents relax, eat, and drink. While the pandemic has shifted our offerings, we are still committed to being a hub of activity for young families. We are currently housing daily learning pods while school is virtual and using our space for select classes and private events. We look forward to bringing open play, food and drinks, and birthday parties back into our daily operation as it becomes safe to do so.
Help your child connect to other kids and learn through outdoor play. In this new class, a certified Tinkergarten Leader guides the group through an engaging 30-min online session, introducing a new play lesson each week. Each lesson supports a different aspect of creativity and inspires hours of purposeful play at home. You get easy activity guides and Q&A with your Leader to help you support your child’s learning, too.

ISMA Children’s Program
Using elements of yoga, tai chi, dance, gymnastics, and Pilates, the children find themselves jumping, bouncing, balancing peacefully, moving rhythmically… enhancing their motor skills, coordination, and endurance… they become aware of their breath, proper skeletal alignment, the flow of their energy, and the use of their imaginations. The boys and girls also learn to read Labanotation, the written language of movement.
