Hello DC Area Moms! My name is Claudia Smistek and I am a research assistant at BL2. We are doing a research project on how children learn over time. Here is more information listed below if you are interested:

Are you interested in how children learn? We at the Brain and Language Center for Neuroimaging (BL2) are too! We are part of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). In our BL2 Center, we are conducting a study on how [deaf and hearing children] learn, particularly in the areas of language, reading, and other higher cognitive functions (attention and emotion).

We are recruiting children [that have no hearing loss, use hearing aids, or use cochlear implants]. [Both monolingual (English) or bilingual (English/ASL) who will soon enter the 1st grade are invited to participate]. We will test them before and after their first year of primary schooling. Our studies are designed to be a fun opportunity for both parents and children.

Children will play science games while we measure their brain activity using harmless light (safe with hearing aids and cochlear implants) and their temperature using a thermal camera (touchless). This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at Gallaudet University. Participation is entirely voluntary.

We will pay $20 per hour for your participation and travel to/from our BL2 Center. Children will also receive a small toy!

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to call our lab at (202) 618-6808 or email us at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment.

WHEN SHOULD I CALL EARLY STAGES?

If you are concerned about how your child is walking, talking, playing, learning, or behaving, don’t wait to see if they will grow out of it. The experts at our family-friendly center will work with you to identify your child’s strengths as well as areas where they might need extra help. The first five years of a child’s life are the most important to their development. The earlier a child receives services, the more likely it is that their needs will be reduced or even eliminated as they get older.

WHAT SERVICES CAN EARLY STAGES PROVIDE?

All children referred to Early Stages receive a developmental screening. If necessary, your child will receive a more in-depth evaluation and services. Some of the services that Early Stages can recommend include specialized instruction, speech/language therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological services, and behavioral support services.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD NEEDS AN EVALUATION?

Your family is assigned to a Family Care team member, who will walk you through our process from start to finish. They will contact you before the evaluation to make sure you understand the process and what will happen. On the day of your visit, your child will work with a team of specialists who will use play activities to evaluate your child. They will take the time to help your child feel comfortable and you will be able to watch the entire evaluation.

WHO DECIDES WHAT SERVICES MY CHILD WILL RECEIVE?

You and members of the evaluation staff will make all decisions together as a team. You may also invite other people you want involved. This team determines what services your child may need and the right school site at which to receive them. Your Family Care team member will work with the placement specialist to determine which school will best support your child’s needs and make sure all the paperwork gets to the school.

WHERE ARE THE EARLY STAGES CENTERS?

The Early Stages Center at Walker Jones Education Campus is located at 1125 New Jersey Avenue NW. The 96 bus stops right in front, and the nearest Metrorail stops are Union Station on the red line and Mt. Vernon Square-7th Street Convention Center on the green and yellow lines. Free 3 hour street parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Early Stages Center at Minnesota Avenue is located at 4058 Minnesota Avenue NE. The center is right next to the Minnesota Avenue Metrorail station on the orange line, which is served by several bus routes. Parking is available in the neighborhood and in the Metro parking lot (this requires a SmarTrip card).

HOW DOES A FAMILY GET STARTED WITH EARLY STAGES?

  1. You can contact the center directly.
  2. A child care provider, teacher, doctor, or other professional who knows your child may contact the center with a concern. In these cases, we will contact you. We can only begin the process with your permission.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT EARLY STAGES?

The best way is the way that is easiest for you!

If your child is younger than 2 years 8 months, please contact Strong Start, the DC Early Intervention Program, at (202) 727-3665.

US Chess Center - Logo.jpg
8560 2nd Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, USA

The U.S. Chess Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of teaching students, especially at-risk youth, to play chess in order to improve their academic and social skills.

The U.S. Chess Center’s teaching methods are fun and effective. Our nationally certified chess teachers help students become creative, enjoy learning, and pursue their passions. We emphasize problem-solving over memorization; as our students learn to think independently, they achieve success and develop well-earned senses of accomplishment. We provide students from throughout the Washington metropolitan area opportunities to meet as friends and equals over the chessboard at our classes, tournaments, and special events.

Not only have our students become champions in chess (winning more than 50 state and national championship titles), they also have used chess to accomplish their academic and life goals. Two of our students earned Rhodes Scholarships and hundreds earned academic scholarships. See where our students have gone to college.

Since 1992, we have taught chess to nearly 40,000 students and at over 150 schools across the National Capital Region.  View a map of the schools and places where we have taught chess or held events over the past 30 years.

Our goals include:

  • Improving academic skills.
  • Increasing children’s attention spans.
  • Teaching young people that they have control over much of their environment, so that the decisions that they make will have consequences in the future, even if not all of those consequences are immediately apparent.
  • Bringing together students from a wide range of backgrounds in a safe, fun setting.
  • Increasing students’ self-confidence.
  • Awakening an interest in learning and achievement in students of all ages.
  • Improving the resiliency of youths so that they avoid negative temptations.

ISMA Children’s Program

Using elements of yoga, tai chi, dance, gymnastics, and Pilates, the children find themselves jumping, bouncing, balancing peacefully, moving rhythmically… enhancing their motor skills, coordination, and endurance… they become aware of their breath, proper skeletal alignment, the flow of their energy, and the use of their imaginations. The boys and girls also learn to read Labanotation, the written language of movement.
